JURA LIMESTONE
A journey through time
Around 180 million years ago...
...the area of today's southern Franconian Jura was completely different from what we know today. Instead of rolling hills and dense forests, a tropical shallow sea stretched across the landscape. The sun glittered on the water's surface, waves lapped against the wide lagoons, and exotic marine life thrived in the depths of the warm shelf sea.
Due to its exceptional material density and polishability, Jura limestone became a highly sought-after material.
Building material.
Fossils that tell us about a long-gone world. Every block of this natural stone holds stories millions of years old, revealed in the form of petrified shells, corals, and skeletal remains.
The pressure of the overlying layers compressed the deposits further and further, causing them to solidify.
Lime and clay mixed, creating the characteristic light-colored limestones and marls.
Traces of the creatures that lived there at that time have been preserved:
Jurassic
Over time, dense layers of sediment formed and became increasingly compacted. The Earth's crust shifted, sea levels fluctuated, and nature tirelessly continued to create a masterpiece in stone. After about 20 million years, the Upper Jurassic, also known as White Jurassic or Malm, was formed.
– a precious legacy of Earth's history.
Algae and sponges covered the underwater landscape, ammonites and belemnites scurried among them, while
Gigantic marine reptiles glided through the blue expanse.
Over millions of years, deposits of dead organisms and fine lime particles accumulated on the seabed.
Its natural variety of colors, ranging from warm yellows to elegant grey, makes it unique.
MANY POSSIBLE USES
Its particularly high abrasion resistance and heat storage capacity make it ideal for numerous applications:
Whether as flooring in historical buildings, as elegant facade cladding or as a sophisticated material for stairs, window sills and wall designs – Jura limestone perfectly combines nature, aesthetics and functionality.
Even the Romans recognized its outstanding qualities and used it in their buildings. Today, architects, stonemasons, and designers worldwide rely on this time-honored material, which impresses with its durability and timeless elegance.
In the quarries of the Franconian Jura, this natural treasure has been extracted for decades and processed using state-of-the-art technology. The result is a range of materials that enhance any construction project and last for generations.
Jura limestone is not just a building material – it's a piece of Earth's history that still leaves its mark today. Those who choose it are not only bringing a robust and elegant natural stone into their homes, but also a fragment of time that tells stories of a tropical sea, of prehistoric creatures, and of the power of nature. A stone that connects past and future in a unique way.
